Jan Merta (*1952) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1981-87 in the studio of Oldřich Oplt and Jiří Ptáček. He was one of the leading figures in Czech painting of the generation of the 1980s. From the beginning of his mature work, he gradually addressed artistic issues associated with his own pursuit of a perfect "grasp of reality" and its depiction. After 1990, he gradually abandoned the theme of "solitary objects" and moved on to a broader capture and processing of the "real world". His work with color and its transfer to the surface is significant for his work.
