The publication was prepared by a four-member team from the Institute of Czech Literature of the ASCR and the Faculty of Arts of Palacký University in Olomouc as part of a grant from the GA CR (editor-in-chief Pavel Kořínek).

In recent years, the domestic comics and picture series have enjoyed increased support from readers, critics and professional researchers. The long-neglected, if not completely deliberately overlooked and limited media genre is receiving attention through partial publications or exhibitions, but a more comprehensive historical overview has so far been lacking. It is probably difficult to imagine a book about several thousand characters and heroes, which would still be clear and readable for readers. And such is the History of Czechoslovak comics of the 20th century. They bring the first comprehensive and professionally founded treatise on the comic book of the 20th century in our cultural and linguistic space, offer a look at its changes and tendencies, commemorate the most famous personalities (Lada, Sekora, Saudek, Němeček) and of course represent well-known and lesser-known comic book heroes. Not to mention many creators, magazines, books and activities forgotten today. With an emphasis on following formal, genre and motivational lines of development, History naturally includes in its interpretation the field of comic translation, as well as more broadly conceived excursions devoted to the social position of comics and picture series. The history of Czechoslovak comics of the 20th century does not only want to offer a detailed description of Czechoslovak comics and image-series work, but also indirectly tells the story of the position, function and changes of comics in the Czech and Slovak-language cultural space. Two extensive volumes (I: 1900–1964; II: 1964–2000) are accompanied by rich illustrative material, detailed registers of names and subjects, and medallions of domestic comic book creators.
