This is the first Czech book, which has been dedicated to the subject of Gothic architecture, mural and manuscript painting as well as handicrafts from the territory of what historically used to be the Cheb region in Western Bohemia.
In the publication a special study dealing with Gothic sculpture of the indicated territory brings a detailed catalogue of preserved historical objects from this area, illustrated in an extensive supplement of visual material.
It includes works that were crafted during the high and late Middle Ages
(1300 - 1550); some on display at the GAVU Cheb gallery's permanent exhibition.
The set comprising of more than forty Gothic artefacts features such unique works of art as: the mystical Pieta from the Dominican order in Cheb (the second half of 14th century); The Seated Madonna with St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist, whose origins can be traced back to the royal court of Emperor Charles IV; a late-Gothic altarpiece from Seeberg, whose author had undergone training at the Hans Leinberger Bavarian workshop in Landshut; or the remarkable set of five sculptures representing Reposed Jesus by Hans Maler the Younger, who for a change had practised his craft in Nuremberg and Zwickau.
