The two-volume book about Johann Kupezký (1666-1740) and about the Central European high baroque portrait in general is a unique research work, it can be said to be the lifelong work of the world's leading expert Eduard A. Safarik (Šafařík), an Italian art historian of Czech origin.

The first volume gathers all known paintings of Kupezký, including replicas, workshop and later copies and graphic sheets created according to Kupezký's works. The second volume presents a selection of portraits by Kupezky's pupils and followers, including paintings by other painters whose works have long been mistakenly attributed to Kupezky.

In his many years of collecting and sorting material about Kupezk, Eduard A. Safarik followed up on his grandfather Eduard Šafařík sen., Whose monograph on this most important Central European Baroque portraitist was published in 1928.
