The catalogue published to accompany the exhibition held to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV is mainly concerned with his role as monarch and his ambitious political programme and representation of power. The volume presents the scientific findings achieved in the past decade in international research projects. Charles IV’s court culture therefore appears in a different light which – besides Prague – newly accentuates the free imperial city of Nuremberg – the second most important residence of Emperor Charles IV after Prague. Attention is also devoted to the relationships of Charles’s Prague-Nuremberg court circles with other centres of the Empire, such as Strasbourg, Cologne, Mainz, Erfurt, Magdeburg and the Vienna of the Habsburgs. The catalogue addresses Charles’s court representation in the broad context of 14th-century Europe. The authors regard this era as a period of a flourishing art that centred around Europe’s ruling courts. Profound climatic changes and catastrophes that afflicted the population in his day are also discussed in the book.
