Architect Martin Rajniš is one of those unique creative individuals whose work has managed to expand the limits of our understanding and break down our stereotypical notions of what “real” architecture should look like. Skici / Sketches presents a selection of Rajniš’s architectural sketches – of his realized designs as well as his breathtaking but unrealized visions. Readers can explore in detail how Rajniš designed the one-of-a-kind Gulliver airship that currently rises over the rooftop of the DOX Center for Contemporary Art, the Doubravka tower (whose shape has earned it the nickname “Triffid”), or the lighthouse and museum of Jára Cimrman. In the accompanying text, the internationally respected architect – who is known for his use of wood and for working in harmony with nature – gives us insight into his personal life and working methods, and offers inspirational observations and reflections on contemporary society and where it is headed.
Martin Rajniš is the recipient of the Locus Foundation’s 2014 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture for outstanding contribution to international architecture.
