The fundamental work of the Polish art historian Piotr Piotrowski, The Meanings of Modernism. On the history of Polish art after 1945, he presents the key moments of Polish art from the end of the Second World War to the 1990s. Piotrowski interprets the art scene in the context of the social and political situation and boldly challenges a number of established, even self-mythologizing interpretations - for example, the division of art from the time of the previous regime into official and unofficial. He also does not shy away from criticizing the development of Polish society in the 1990s, including the role of the Catholic Church and the Solidarity movement. The book introduces the reader to various approaches to the legacy of modernism: from the post-war crisis of the image, through the neo-avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s, to postmodernism of the late 20th century. Piotrowski notes how and why the position of art in Poland differed from other Soviet bloc countries and explains what ultimately made this art attractive to Western curators. The Czech edition is complemented by a critical introduction that introduces the book to the Czech reader in its local context. The author is Pavlína Morganová, an expert on the subject.

The publication was peer-reviewed by Prof. Milena Bartlová, PhDr., CSc.
