The book Treasures of Ukraine showcases more than a hundred objects and buildings – from Byzantine icons and wooden chapels to cathedrals with golden domes, folk art and avant-garde masterpieces – and bears witness to the rich art and heritage of a country that today faces destruction and devastation. The striking photographs are accompanied by commentary from renowned artists, curators and critics, who explain the individual works of art and reveal the complex history of the Ukrainian people and its impact on the present day. 

The book traces the development of ancient cultures, such as the Trypillian and Scythian civilisations, the first states, such as Kievan Rus’ and the Cossack Hetmanate, as well as the dawn of modernism and remarkable contemporary paintings and works of art with political overtones, thereby reminding us that art and monuments are important sources of collective memory and identity.
