For the appearance, character and life of Prague, the Vltava, a river whose flow prepared the relief of the landscape for the settlement of the Prague basin and then for the formation of the city that grew into a metropolis, has been a crucial factor for the appearance, character and life of Prague since its inception. Over the course of its history, the city gradually conquered the river. The people of Prague learned to use its energy in mills and later power plants, to bridge the river with different types of bridges, to adjust the banks and islands, to build embankments. The 19th century probably entered the changes of the face of the river most radically. The Vltava banks, until now mostly used as economic outskirts, were transformed into desirable locations with exhibition buildings, social centers and elegant promenades. In the introductory part, the author shows the historical connection between Prague and the Vltava river, when the practical functions of the river came to the fore, nowadays mostly perceived as an aesthetic element, completing the picturesque image of the city. In the second part, she then becomes a tour guide commenting on contemporary photographs of interesting objects and places connecting the Vltava and Prague, be it historic mills, weirs, floodplains, islands, water towers, bridges, embankments with their buildings, and the river as a place of social life in the city. In addition to photographs of exteriors, the text is accompanied by documentary images, a location index with a map of objects, an overview of islands, bridges, embankments and also personalities.
