For several decades, Václav Kabát was one of the leading figures in Czech book illustration. He illustrated dozens of books, and his work has accompanied generations of readers, particularly thanks to his long-standing collaboration with the Albatros publishing house. Yet his work was never merely an accompaniment to literature—Kabát created a unique artistic world where humor, fantasy, and quiet poetry converge.

This first comprehensive retrospective publication presents Kabát’s work in a broader context—from book illustrations through free-form graphics to distinctive drawings of fantastical machines, creatures, and imaginary worlds. In addition to reproductions of his artwork, it also includes a biographical study, an interview with the author, his own and autobiographical texts, and a list of works.

Kabát’s artistic world is full of playfulness, subtle irony, and mystery. In his drawings, the tradition of Czech imaginative illustration meets the author’s distinctive imagination, which is capable of creating wondrous and often poetic images from ordinary things.

The publication offers readers not only a glimpse into the life and work of this distinctive illustrator, but also serves as a reminder of an important chapter in 20th-century Czech book culture.

The book is being published to mark the author’s 94th birthday.
