Stanislav Podhrázský

Stanislav Podhrázský (1920–1999), like many other artists, was powerfully influenced by Surrealism in his youth and especially by Mikuláš Medek, but he soon embarked on his own highly individual and solitary creative path. This book focuses on Podhrázský’s work in painting, drawing, and sculpture and presents it in a context that in many respects links the artist to outstanding representatives of the Italian Renaissance, Mannerism and Symbolism. These artists are united by their quest for beauty and the secrets of human emotion, which each of them, however, discovers in the artistic language of their era. This monograph is the first broad survey of Podhrázský’s work. Besides his well-known pieces, readers will also find a number of paintings and drawings never before reproduced in print that help to provide a fuller understanding of this extraordinary body of work.
