This book is the output of the project Architecture and Czech Politics in the 19th - 21st Century, on which the team of the Department of Theory and History of Art UMPRUM has been working since 2018. The authors did not want to "map" the political architecture of the Czech lands in the 19th century. architecture and politics. They were interested in how architectural forms represented ideological and socio-psychological contents or how they co-created power relations and political positions. The motto in the title of the book, authored by the architect and patron Josef Hlávka, points to the central theme of the volume - the role of architecture in the formation of the modern Czech nation. In addition, the authors show how monumental architecture from the period under discussion expressed or shaped citizens' loyalty to the state or dynasty, how it contributed to the development of democratic institutions and civil society, or what role it played in social processes associated with industrialization and modernization.
