This publication accompanied the exhibition URSZULA BROLL / Átman means Breath, which took place at the House of Arts in Ostrava (GVUO) from 18 January to 12 March 2023.

The book contains texts by Ewelina Krzeszowska, Justyna Balisz-Schmelzová and Janina Hobgarská analysing in detail the important developmental and thematic areas of Urszula Broll, who is represented in almost all stages of post-war Polish art. The catalogue cover already visually conveys the character of the work of this important Polish artist. As an emerging artist, Ursula Broll (1930-2020) was one of the few women who participated in the activities of the Silesian underground. For example, she was a member of the anti-communist art group St-53. In the beginning, she painted expressive portraits of Silesian women, cubist still lifes and industrial landscapes. She worked with abstraction and chance. The Oneiron group, which brought together members inclined towards cognitive experiments, meditation, magic and alchemy, was essential for the artist. It was a discourse of philosophy, psychology and art. This environment and the artist's personal interest gradually led her, from the 1970s onwards, to the spiritually attuned creation of geometric patterns - mandalas - influenced by Buddhism.
