The book Josef Sudek / Otto Rothmayer: A visit to Mr. Magician is based on the exhibition of the same name held in 2021 and 2022 for the 125th anniversary of the birth of Josef Sudek and the 55th anniversary of the death of the architect Otto Rothmayer at the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague. The publication takes the reader to Prague Castle – the common love of both friends – and to the architect's villa and its small garden in Břevnovská street Na Bateriéch, which in the 1940s and 1960s became a meeting place for a group of related artists and friends. For example, Josef Kaplický, Bedřich Stefan, Hana Wichterlová, Vladimír Studený, Pravoslav Rada and René Roubíček found refuge in troubled times and inspiration for their work here. Josef Sudek took a number of photographs here, which he then arranged in several cycles, for example in the series Walk in the Magical Garden, Memories, Little Memories or Notes. A large set of Sudek's works - contact copies and photographic pigments - are complemented by the so-called přidl and veteš, whose original adjustment was collaborated with Sudek by Otto Rothmayer and which are today valued as the most progressive contribution to world photography. In the samples, the book also recalls the works of the host himself and mutual friends from the collections of the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague, the Museum of the Capital City of Prague, the National Technical Museum in Prague, the Olomouc Art Museum and private property.
